About Herouard & Benard
From the grandson of Rose Buffet and Jean Jacques Herouard, Alfred Herouard (1866) who lived in Ezy sur Eure one of the villages considered by the French to be the birthplace of wind instruments. Alfred developed the manufacture of clarinet ligatures but died young, leaving his wife as a female company director, unique for the time, managing the company. From their eldest son, an aviation enthusiast, leaving the company to set up his own called “Herouard Feres” followed by “Herouard Pierre”. His ingenious enterprise improved the manufacture of not only clarinet ligatures, but those of saxophones to. He designed a “cover” to protect the fragile reed, subsequently called the “cap”. It was Alfred and his wife’s daughter, Claudine, that married Marcel Benard in 1946, who then modernised the company and renamed it Herouard & Benard. Today, Herouard & Benard are the only surviving company at the birthplace of the French woodwind instrument industry, still in the hands of the founding family. Their vocation is not only to maintain and develop the company, but to promote musical events in the region.
